The Medical Centre of Lehigh Acres is currently working to build a behavioral health clinic that enables our community to find effective treatments and services for mental and/or substance use disorders.

While effective treatments exist, far too few people with behavioral health conditions receive the help that they need. For instance, data from SAMHSA’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) — 2014 (PDF | 3.4 MB) shows that in 2014, 15.7 million adults reported having a major depressive episode (MDE) over a 12-month period.

Of those, about one-third of adults (33.2%) did not seek professional help during the previous 12 months. The 2014 NSDUH data also shows that 21.2 million Americans (ages 12 and older) needed treatment for an illegal drug or alcohol use problem in 2014.

However, only about 2.5 million people received the specialized treatment they needed in the previous 12 months.

While many Americans still go without needed behavioral health treatment, recent changes to the United States health system are removing barriers to access behavioral health services. As a result of the Affordable Care Act, a range of health plans are being required to cover essential benefits including mental health and substance abuse treatments.

The Affordable Care Act extends the impact of the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA) so that many health plans offer coverage for mental health or substance use disorders.
